eSIM stands for embedded Subscriber Identity Module — the same thing a physical SIM card does, built directly into your phone. No slot, no plastic, no swapping. You download a data plan over the internet and your phone connects to a mobile network wherever you are.
Unlike a removable SIM card that is physically tied to one carrier, an eSIM is programmable. It lives inside your phone's hardware. When you buy an eSIM data plan, you receive a QR code or a set of activation codes. You scan the code (or enter it manually), your device downloads the carrier profile, and you're connected — all without touching your SIM tray.
You can store multiple eSIM profiles on one device, switching between them in your phone settings. Only one profile is active for data at a time.
